CUPID AND VENUS: LOVE CHASTISED are a pair of illustrations I did years ago, inspired by some of my favorite stories from Greco-Roman period mythologies. The stories about Eros/Cupid and Aphrodite/Venus are, like so many archetypal myths, rich with allegory that continues to resonate in our own times. This, I would say, is why the gods and goddesses are said to be immortal. These two illustrations are an affectionate interpretation of one story in particular, in which the goddess of Love chastises her son the god of Desire for shooting his arrows of erotic attraction so willy-nilly, thus instigating much chaos and confusion in the affairs of gods and mortals. Afterwards, of course, Venus is said to kiss Cupid rather possessively to remind him that he is hers, loved and restored to her good graces.

 

The originals of these illustrations are available for sale, and will be sold only as a pair. They are each 11 by 14 inches on 70 lb. drawing paper. The price for the pair is $760 plus shipping to destination.
